BRIDGEWATER — Chief Christopher Delmonte and the Bridgewater Police Department are honoring fallen officers from near and far during National Police Week this week.
National Police Week runs from May 10 to May 16 and is observed throughout the United States as a way to honor local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
The Bridgewater Police Department has placed its National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial flag on the front of station as it does each May in honor of National Police Week.
Additionally, to commemorate fallen heroes, the Bridgewater Police Foundation and the Bridgewater Police 5K have made an annual donation to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
The Bridgewater Police Department will also join agencies nationwide in honoring Peace Officers Memorial Day on Friday, May 15 by flying its flags at half-staff to honor officers who have given their lives in service to their communities.
“During National Police Week we would like to pay special recognition to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives protecting the communities they serve,” said Chief Delmonte. “We mourn the loss of our fallen brothers and sisters and the family members, colleagues and communities who have been affected by those losses.”
Every year, between 25,000-40,000 law enforcement officers from around the world would normally gather in Washington, D.C. to pay their respects during a number of planned events. This year’s events across the nation have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 146 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2019 and 72 have been killed so far in 2020.
